Job Title: Medical Assistant
General Summary: A nonexempt position responsible for performing a variety of duties. May be involved in both the clinical and administrative areas including assisting physicians with patient care and handling clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinical services.
Essential Job Responsibilities: 1. Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned. 2. Checking schedules and organizing patient flow. 3. Accompanying patients to exam/procedure room 4. Assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc. 5. Obtaining patient history and charting. 6. Performing screenings per provider guidelines 7. Assisting physicians/physician assistants with various procedures. 8. Relaying instructions to patients/families and providing pertinent information. 9. Answering phone calls, returning phone calls and documenting phone calls. 10. Fulfills clerical responsibilities such as scheduling procedures and or surgeries as assigned that may include sending/receiving patient medical records. 11. Pre-authorization and Pre-certification of procedures and or surgeries required. 12. Obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc. 13. Completing forms/requisitions as needed. (STD FMLA) 14. Scheduling appointments. 15. Verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics. 16. Managing and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately. 17. Fulfills responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment per department protocols. 18. Cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control 19. Cleaning sterilizer per scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records. 20. Ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms.
21. Prepares and processes correspondence. 22. Responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor. 23. Check vital signs. 24. Exam preparations 25. Clinical pharmacology. 26. Drug preparation through various routes including injections; prescription verifications with physician’ s orders 27. Minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up pre/post-surgical care, applying dressings, and suture removal; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring 28. Instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, and home care; laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines 29. Quality control methods 30. Emergency triage, and first aid. 31. Medical assistants must adhere to the MA scope of practice when working with laboratory specimen. 32. Other duties as assigned. 33. Education: High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED), current certification or registry, medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution, or a community college course in medical assisting if requested but not required.
Experience: Prefer a minimum one year of recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant and/or documented evidence of externship completed in a medical office.
Knowledge: 1. Medical terminology and office procedures 2. Health care field and medical office protocols/procedures. 3. Assisting tasks related to medical practice. 4. Information that must be conveyed to patients and families. 5. Spelling and punctuation 6. Verbal and written communications with Pharmacy, Physicians and Patients

Other Requirements: Maintain professionalism, good personal hygiene and professional dress code/uniform.
Equipment Operated: Standard medical exam/office equipment, which may include computerized health information management system for medical records, etc.
Work Environment: Clinical and Administrative. Occasional evening and weekend work.
Physical Requirements: Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone. Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screens. Physical: Ability to stand, sit and walk for 8-10 hour at a time.
